Paro Taktsang (Dzongkha: སྤ་གྲོ་སྟག་ཚང་, also known as the Taktsang Palphug Monastery and the Tiger’s Nest), is a sacred Vajrayana Himalayan Buddhist site located in the cliffside of the upper Paro valley in Bhutan. It is one of thirteen Tiger’s Nest caves in historical Tibet in which Padmasambhava practiced and taught Vajrayana.
Sitting high on a hill at Kuensel Phodrang, the 169-foot bronze Buddha Dordenma statue is a symbol of peace and happiness. The statue not only offers panoramic views of Thimphu Valley but also holds an important spiritual significance for locals and visitors alike. Legend says it fulfills an ancient prophecy, showering blessings upon the world.
At 3,100 meters, Dochula Pass offers sweeping views of the eastern Himalayas, including Bhutan’s highest peak, Gangkar Puensum. The pass is adorned with 108 stupas known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in memory of Bhutanese soldiers. Tashichho Dzong is a magnificent fortress that houses the throne room of the King of Bhutan and serves as the summer residence of the Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s chief abbot. Adorned with intricate woodwork and vibrant murals, this is a must-see site for visitors.
